The side burner generates up to 10,000BTU, so you can use it to prepare any sides and sauces you want. The best thing about it is that you won’t have to step away from the grill. It even comes with a convenient lid that helps keep water and dust away from the burner and acts as a secondary prepping shelf.
I think that a cooking surface of 425 square inches is more than enough to cook lunch for the entire family. Of course, getting the extra 150 square inches in the form of a swing-away warming rack is not bad either for toasting purposes.
Another great thing, in my opinion, is the cart-style design that offers a decent balance of mobility and stability on uneven terrain.

Although not a make it or break it feature, the built-in bottle opener on the left shelf is a neat feature. It’s probably something that every grill manufacturer should incorporate into residential designs. This grill has a bit of everything I like. The temperature gauge is accurate, the built-in bottle opener is there to help out during hot summer days, and each burner has a dedicated ignition. Also, there’s a side burner for side dishes.

Its total cooking surface rounds up to 644 square inches, which is more than enough to get even heating and a good sear from the combined 52,000BTU output of the burners. The combination of stainless steel and black finishing is a classic one, and it’s easy to clean and maintain.
I also like the cart-style design and the fact that there’s a storage cabinet with two doors for easy access. The side shelves are a neat addition, too, especially since one of them is a lidded burner. Perhaps what’s most impressive is the fact that the side burner generates up to 13,000BTU.
Although not designed as a searing station, you can turn the side burner into one by using a smaller cooking grate on top.
This Dyna-Glo DGE Series propane gas grill is one of my favorites when it comes to style and performance. Its combined power of 40,000BTU of the main burners, and the additional boost of 12,000BTU from the side unit, makes it a very versatile grill.

Side Burners vs Searing Stations
Not all side burners are also searing stations. If you notice that one looks a lot like a stove burner, then it’s probably not a searing station. For it to be a searing station, it should either feature an infrared or at least a conventional unit with a grilling grate on top.
The majority of manufacturers will fit a searing station under the main cooking surface. So, when it comes to four-burner grills, you’re either getting three or four main burners. With three central units, the fourth one will have a higher output and double as a searing station.
Cast Iron or Stainless Steel Grates
Here’s why cast-iron is my favorite and top recommendation. Not all stainless steel grates come with a protective coating, while almost all cast iron grilling grates do.
Not only that, but I find that cast iron has superior heat retention and lasts much longer. It’s also pretty heavy-duty in terms of what it can handle. That goes for both the thicker and thinner grates.
Last but not least, stainless steel is not nearly as easy to clean as you might think. Not when it comes to grills anyway. A coated cast iron grate will be much easier to keep in pristine condition, even if you grill very often.
Heat Retention and Temperature Control
These are two fundamental aspects of grilling – temperature control and heat retention. You achieve the former with the built-in lid thermometer and accurate control knobs. Of course, you’ll also need a steady flow connection to the tank.
The quality of the grilling grates and the thickness of the lid will largely determine a grill’s performance in the heat retention category. However, I need to point out that there’s nothing wrong with thinner covers. If they have a tight seal, you can grill with the lid on just fine. But, if it is slim and you lift it too often to check your food, you’ll lose a lot of heat.
I recommend learning to grill by checking the temperature inside the grilling box and giving the lid a rest. That’s even more important if you have somewhat weaker burners, or if they take too long to reach the working temperature.
